The Outer Banks of North Carolina was chosen by the Wright Brothers because of the winds that come off of the Atlantic Ocean. On December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur changed history in Kill Devil Hills with three successful flights - 120 feet, 175 feet and finally 200 feet in distance.
On October 24, 1911, the Wright Brothers set a record for soaring 9 minutes and 45 seconds. October 21-24, 2011, thousands gathered at the Wright Brothers Memorial to celebrate 100 years since the Wright Brothers set this record. This event was called Soaring 100. If you were able to attend the celebration and did not buy enough memorabilia or if you were not able to attend, we have all the Soaring 100 gear available here.
